Cavities Between the Teeth Are Especially Dangerous

Cavities between your teeth, also known as interproximal cavities, are quite common. Like any other type of cavity, interproximal cavities form when your tooth enamel wears down, allowing bacteria to build up and cause decay. Read on to learn more about how interproximal cavities are diagnosed and treated.

Symptoms of Cavities Between Your Teeth

When cavities are not caught and treated early, you may experience symptoms such as heightened sensitivity to sugar and temperature changes, as well as discomfort while chewing with the affected teeth. This is due to your enamel being worn down, which means that more sensitive nerve endings are exposed.

How Are Interproximal Cavities Diagnosed and Treated?

We diagnose interproximal cavities by taking X-rays, which is why it is so important to keep up with your regular checkups at our office. Since interproximal cavities are so difficult to see, you might have one and be unaware until it progresses, and you begin experiencing discomfort. If we catch an interproximal cavity early enough, we can treat it by recalcifying the enamel with a fluoride gel. However, if you have not seen us in a while and the cavity has advanced deeper into the enamel, we will have to fill the cavity using a tooth-colored dental filling. More severe cavities may require a root canal or other treatments.

Are Interproximal Cavities Preventable?

Cavities can generally be prevented by maintaining a good oral hygiene routine and visiting our office for regular checkups. However, cavities between the teeth cannot be prevented by brushing alone, since brushing does not clean between your teeth effectively. Flossing once a day is crucial for removing plaque and bacteria between your teeth and preventing cavities from forming in these tight spaces. Eating a lot of sugar, frequent snacking, drinking acidic beverages, smoking, and drinking alcohol can all increase your risk of cavities as well.
