How to Keep Teeth Clean Following a Recent Root Canal
Posted on 5/24/2021 by Alan Snodgrass
Understanding a root canal may help you care for your teeth after you have had the procedure. During a root canal procedure, an infected area around the root of your tooth is cleaned, and a special type of filling is put in to seal the canal. This is needed because of tooth decay that has reached the pulp of your tooth. This can happen because you have an abscess or because of another type of injury to your tooth.
What to Expect After and Root Canal
One of the goals of a root canal is to reduce discomfort, you may feel tender immediately after a procedure. Any mild discomfort or tenderness can be treated with over-the-counter medications. If your root canal is followed by a filling or crown, it may be best to avoid chewing with the tooth you are expected to have repaired. It is important to continue to engage in oral hygiene even after a root canal.
Oral Hygiene After a Root Canal
Most root canals are routine, and many continue with their normal daily activities the following day. Continuing with your normal oral hygiene practice of brushing twice daily, flossing once daily, and the use of antiseptic mouthwash is still recommended to maintain the health of your teeth. Typically, after your root canal there will be a follow-up appointment in which any concerns may be addressed, and the health of the tooth will be evaluated.
One of the most important parts of oral hygiene is remembering to engage in it daily. Creating an oral hygiene routine reduces the chances that you will forget to engage in oral hygiene or that you will forget parts of the process. A root canal procedure should not deter you from completing your normal oral hygiene routine.
